Coronavirus: Origin, Symptoms, Prevention, and Treatment
Coronavirus (also known as Covid-19) is believed to be originated from wet markets in Wuhan, China. These markets were dead and live animals including fish and birds were sold, posed a very high risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans. This is caused by poor hygiene standards in the markets. Bats are believed to be the main hosts of the virus. Bats are known to be hosts to a wide range of zoonotic viruses including Ebola, HIV, and rabies. Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market but may have infected live chickens or other animals sold there.
Coronavirus symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don't develop any symptoms. These symptoms are similar to other respiratory diseases. They include :
i) dry cough
iii) shortness of breath
iv) sore throat
vi) nasal congestion
Symptoms are thought to appear between two and 10 days after contracting the virus, but it may be up to 24 days.
There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Preventive measures include :
i) Wash your hands often with soap and water ( or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol) for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
ii) Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe
iii) Avoid close contact with people who are sick
iv) Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others
v) Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
There is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 should receive supportive care to help relieve symptoms. Doctors are still searching for a cure. Most people recover from the disease without needing special treatment.
